Orlando, Fla. – We’re five races into the Indy Lights Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and I’m leading the championship after very strong weekends in Long Beach and at Barber Motorsports Park. The Juncos Racing guys have been working really hard ever since St. Petersburg and it’s really starting to show in our results.

Leading at the start at Long Beach.

Long Beach is a track I’ve always wanted to race at. It has so much history as an event and it’s a race my parents went to every year when they lived in Los Angeles. We were quick right from the get-go. I ended practice with the fastest lap and had pole position up until the final lap when Jack Harvey pipped me by a few hundredths. The start of the race was a bit of a mess. I had to avoid a crash between Jack and my teammate Kyle Kaiser that caused me to fall back to fifth. I made three passes going into Turn Nine and climbed back up to second by the end of the race. We were pleased with the result but knew we had the pace to win.

A double victory at Barber.

A few days later we were in Alabama at one of my favorite tracks, Barber Motorsports Park. There are so many fast corners and elevation changes; it’s great to drive! Again we were really fast right away, topping the time sheets in practice. Indy Lights qualifying is always very intense. Everyone puts on two or three new sets of Cooper Tires so the order is always changing and you don’t really know where you are until the end. I put a strong lap together that was good enough to give me my first pole position.

Celebrating with the Juncos team!

The first race was pretty straightforward. I got a good jump on the start and was able to keep the lead. From then on I just focused on not making any mistakes and I pulled away to win by almost seven seconds! I went into the second race with the same mindset, get a good start and be consistent. We were one of the only teams that saved a new set of Cooper Tires for the race so I knew we were in good shape. Again I got the lead on the start but the race wasn’t quite as relaxed as the first. I had a car in front of me that was trying to stay on the lead lap the entire race. I attempted to pass him once but he turned in on me and we made slight contact. Luckily nothing was damaged! From then on I backed off and gave him space to not take any more risks. We swept the weekend and took over the lead in the championship!

We’re heading into the famous month of May in Indianapolis with the points lead, which is a confidence boost for the whole team. Our next race is at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 7-9.

Special thanks to Mazda, Cooper Tires, Doug Mockett & Company, Rising Star Racing, The Stutz, BAD, California Scents, MOBE-, Brad Penn Oil and of course the Juncos Racing team for all of their hard work.

Thanks for reading,
Spencer
